Awake or Woke

Warning.... Opinion incoming:

I sense a murmur, a rumbling, residing below societies surface. A dissension, if you will, between “awake” Christians and “woke” ones. Awake believers are aware of societal ills, issues, and pressures and are standing in perseverance, quietly, keeping their churches open, following the governments guidelines (to a point) and choosing to sing, praise, worship and use their voices to extol the King. They are the ones seeking HIM in intimacy, in the closet, asking for wisdom, discernment and not being swayed by the main stream media firehose of fear. They have their own opinions, Bible-based ones, and are standing firm. And, to some, they look crazed and irrational as they resist the accepted societal “norm”.

I am finding many Christians are headline readers, synopsis grazers and fine-print ignorers. Faith is based on what they see, not on what they ingest (Romans 10:17). Their faith is flimsy and ill-footed. They are swayed with each and every news article, story and whispering. Their foundation is flawed and they fall into deception and false teaching very easily.

An article written by a small town pastor went viral. Representing “Christianity” he made claims, put out an opinion and, in my view, catered to the “woke” - believers and non. It hurt my heart to see deception in black and white. His article caused dissension, division, disunity among co-workers, family and friends. I read a follow up piece where he related he has received severe backlash; He further defended his actions with more deception and side stepping.

John talks about these times, times of deception, of “ear tickling” and speaking what pleases the masses. “For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine and accurate instruction [that challenges them with God’s truth]; but wanting to have their ears tickled [with something pleasing], they will accumulate for themselves [many] teachers [one after another, chosen] to satisfy their own desires and to support the errors they hold, and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable].” 2 Timothy 4 AMP

John continues in 2 Timothy to address the remnant, the awake, in verse 5: “But as for you, be clear-headed in every situation [stay calm and cool and steady], endure every hardship [without flinching], do the work of an evangelist, fulfill [the duties of] your ministry.”

Jesus is coming back for his bride. His church. His followers. He is coming back for those who stood, are standing, and will stand for his truth, his ways and purposes. “Woke” follows society, its wants and needs and bends to the will of the populace; it is ever changing and unstable. God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). I like stable foundations. I have chosen, at the risk of looking uncaring, unsympathetic, and irrational to stand on an unmoving, solid, lasting and reliable surface of God and his word.

Choose this day whom you will serve; as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).
